Every few months, I see the same headline: “ERPs are dead.”
Let’s be clear: ERPs aren’t dead. But bad ERP thinking should be.
Misuse, Not Death
Studies show 55–70% of ERP projects fail to deliver ROI (Gartner, ERP Focus).
But the failure isn’t in the tech. It’s in how we use it.
-
Leaders buy ERP without aligning it to strategy.
-
Businesses underinvest in training and change management.
-
Users resist or simply don’t know how to get the most from the system.
Blaming the ERP is like blaming the chessboard when you lose a game.
When ERP Works - And When It Doesn’t
ERP can be a backbone for complex enterprises.
But for smaller or more agile businesses, simpler tools may deliver better results faster.
The problem is leaders assuming ERP is always the answer.
ERP’s Next Boss Fight: AI
Here’s the real challenge: ERP must evolve.
Unless ERP systems start embedding AI, they’ll be overtaken by leaner, smarter platforms.
Think about it:
-
An ERP that predicts shortages before they happen.
-
A system that recommends process improvements in real time.
-
Automated insights that cut through endless reporting.
That’s the ERP the future demands.
My Take
I’m not an ERP consultant. My focus is on innovation, transformation, and growth.
From that perspective, ERP is just one tool.
It only works if:
-
Leaders know what problem they’re solving.
-
People are trained and empowered to use it.
-
The system evolves with the times, which today means AI-first.
Final Thought
So no, ERPs aren’t dead.
But using them blindly? That should be.
Transformation is about picking the right tool for the right stage - and making sure people can wield it.
The real question isn’t: “Is ERP dead?”
It’s: “Are we ready to use technology intelligently — and evolve with it?”
